PTSD Risk Factors

The following individuals may have increased risk for developing PTSD:
  • Anyone exposed to war or combat
     
  • History of prior exposure to traumatic events
     
  • Repeated exposure to traumatic events
     
  • People that have sustained an injury
     
  • Survivors of rape, domestic violence, physical assault such as a mugging or any other random act of violence
     
  • Survivors of unexpected events such as car accidents or fires
     
  • Survivors of terrorist attacks
     
  • Survivors of natural disasters such as hurricanes or earthquakes
     
  • First responders such as firefighters, police or rescue workers
     
  • Patients who have been diagnosed with a life-threatening illness or those who have had surgery
     
  • People who have experienced grief such as the unexpected loss of a loved one
