The following individuals may have increased risk for developing PTSD:
- Anyone exposed to war or combat
- History of prior exposure to traumatic events
- Repeated exposure to traumatic events
- People that have sustained an injury
- Survivors of rape, domestic violence, physical assault such as a mugging or any other random act of violence
- Survivors of unexpected events such as car accidents or fires
- Survivors of terrorist attacks
- Survivors of natural disasters such as hurricanes or earthquakes
- First responders such as firefighters, police or rescue workers
- Patients who have been diagnosed with a life-threatening illness or those who have had surgery
- People who have experienced grief such as the unexpected loss of a loved one
